Overview
Developed collaboratively by the Commission, UICT, and industry stakeholders, the Communications Testbed for Emerging and Future Technologies integrates hardware, software, datasets, and Open APIs for experimental testing in a physical environment. It encompasses hardware setups, operating systems, software configurations, test terminals, Open APIs and relevant datasets essential for developing, testing, and scaling ICT research and innovations. It brings new technological environments to innovators, academia, and stakeholders, facilitating the journey from concept to experimental validation, prototyping, and deployable solutions.
The main objectives of the Test Bed on Future Technologies are to.
- Help in expert human capacity development.
- To stimulate market development and deployment of future technologies and infrastructure in Uganda.
- Support Policy & Technical Regulation development with evidence-based research.
- Be part of a global RDI testbeds, contribute to Standards, Conformance testing & peer-review.
- Promote academic and sector research on emerging and future technologies and their applications/ services.
- Promote innovation of local solutions and ICT services.
- Test performance of emerging technologies on relevant use cases.
- foster innovation and accelerate time to market.
- Researchers can utilize the Testbed for experimental testing and optimization of 5G and 4G network deployments using the Amarisoft Ultimate Callbox. It also supports machine learning and AI research with the Lambda Vector’s powerful dual GPU machine, facilitating training and testing of AI models with large datasets. IoT development is enabled through prototyping and testing solutions using Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and other relevant sensors. High-speed data processing and analysis are possible using high-performance PCs equipped with premium software like Matlab and various open-source tools. Additionally, the Testbed supports research and development in virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) using Oculus VR and other available VR headsets.
- Innovators can rapidly prototype using 3D printers and comprehensive hardware setups. They can develop and test software applications on high-end iOS, Windows, and Linux PCs. The Testbed provides resources for developing and editing high-quality video and audio projects using Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, the Adobe Suite, and other available software. Innovators can also experiment with and develop unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technologies using high-end drones, sensors, and software tools. Furthermore, the Testbed enables innovation in networking solutions, allowing for testing their effectiveness with reliable high-speed internet.
- For academia, the Testbed supports research projects requiring high-performance computing, large data sets, Open APIs and advanced technological setups. It facilitates student-led projects and experiments by providing access to a wide range of tools and equipment.
- Professional ICT industry players can utilize the Testbed for product testing and validation in a controlled, real-world environment. It supports advanced network optimization studies and deployment strategies. The Testbed also enables security testing and penetration testing on networks and software applications. Additionally, it allows for the integration of various hardware and software systems to create comprehensive ICT solutions.
The Testbed facility, located at Uganda Institute of Communications Technology (UICT) Nakawa, is open for free access to innovators, researchers, academia, and professional industry players.Â
